My run really sucked today. I fell asleep at 10:30 last night and my sons new football decided to call at 11:00 and woke me up. Needless to say I was a bit irritable. I didn't fall back to sleep until 1:00 and woke up at 2:00 with a bad pain in my neck at 2:00. Woke up at 5:00 to get ready for the run. Met Julie at her house at 5:45 and drove up to Wasatch Blvd.. We ran up Wasatch (HOLY CRAP) and then down 9400 S. and back along 1300 E. then ran up the Draper Trail for 5.2 more miles to make it an even 18. We had some great miles but over all our pace was 9:00. I don't know what the deal was but I felt like crap today.

Hey Michelle, I am so glad you set a blog up! It will be fun to keep in touch with you now. I just set up a personal blog and posted pictures from WBR, you probably have already seen them but if not its garrettandmarcie.blogspot.com

I'm so glad you finally have a blog. I'm looking forward to our run tomorrow.

I don't know if any of these miles were actually easy. Ran with Julie and her sister, Angela. Started at Albertson's in Draper and ran around the parking lot and warmed up. Great idea for me cuz I was able to run in and use the potty before we started our run which resulted in a great cramp free run! First 2 miles were a bit up hill but we did them  in 9:17 and 8:55. The third mile is a pain. WAY up hill for a long time so we slowed to 10:34. The next 3 were mostly up 8:50, 8:47, 8:47. Turned around at La Caille and the rest of the way was mostly down hill (still a little up but nothing like the first half) 8:36, 8:31, 7:52, 7:17, 7:44, 7:56 and :48 for the final .11. All in all a great run and I feel good now. Hopefully all this up hill will pay off for St. George. Overall pace-8:35.

Had a great run today. Ran to Texaco on 13400 So. and back by way of North Star Academy, then down to 2200 W. and finished the last .30 with the lovely hill on 2700 W. (by the way I still kept a 9:00 pace on the hill). There wasn't any wind today (very unusual for Bluffdale). My left leg felt a bit tight and sore on the outside of my shin but relaxed after about 3 1/2 miles. Pace-8:49

Oh, one last thing. I got up at 6:00!!!!!!! I have the hardest time getting up before 7:00 except to do my long runs but I did it and hopefully this will be the start to something good.

Yeah, I go to Lifetime and hang out on the treadmills when I'm not in step aerobics. Say "Hi" sometime.

As far as putting up a photo, go to "Blog Options" http://www.fastrunningblog.com/blog_profile.php and there is a place where you upload your picture.

I love how you put the positive twist on the "lovely hill" I run up and down the hill by the new temple in Daybreak and it is definitely "lovely!"

Getting up is hard to do sometimes. I have to be out and running by 5:15 a.m. or it doesn't happen. Sometimes when I stay out too late at night, getting up is extremely difficult. Wouldn't do it w/o my partner's motivation!

Keep up the good work!

I have decided I really like to do speed work on the treadmill or on the track. I went to the gym and warmed up for 3 1/2 at a 9:00 pace, then did 1 1/2 at 5k pace (7:15), recovered for 4 1/2 minutes, another 1 1/2 at 7:12, finished up at 8:55 pace. Felt great but really sweaty. I think some of my sweat flew on the guy next to me because he left really quick. After I was done running I did some shoulders/tris/abs. I don't know if the weight lifting I do helps or hurts but I love it and can't give it up. However, I have backed off on leg weights.

Step endurance class at gym-1 hour equivelant to 6 miles. Ran 2 more on treadmill. 1 at 8:00 pace. I love Step class and I truly feel that some cross training for me makes a big difference. Plus, I love to do so many different things. Also did back/biceps. I upped my miles a little this week and so far I am feeling really great but I also have been eating better the past few weeks. Summer vacation really screws me up. I increased my complex carbs and I am trying to eat more veggies. Other than salad, I get really tired of raw veggies. Love 'em cooked though.

I am going to actually blog this so I will get my sorry butt out of bed tomorrow (which is my birthday). I am going to go to speed group with the Bingham Buttkickers at 5:30. I used to go a lot but it has been a while. I have to get up so dang early to get there but I think I need some group motivation on my speed.

is that the group meeting at S.J. park tommorrow morning? Im going to try to be there so you and Kelli should go if the BB group is those with Peggy, Cheryl, Cheris and Jody and all.

From Michelle on Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 17:26:47

Yup, that would be the same group and yes, they are meeting at SJ Park at 5:30 to run 3-5k's. I'm sure it'll kick my hinder.

From walter on Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 17:34:15

did you do the speed workout with them on tuesday? Have you met me before? if not maybe tommorrow, work on kelli and they sound like they'll have a full group there.

From Michelle on Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 17:39:05

No, I wasn't there Tuesday. I wanted to do some 1 1/2's speedy so I worked on the treadmill at the gym. I haven't met you before but have looked at your blog a few times. You are an awesome runner. Did you see the comment I made on your blog about my brother?

From walter on Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 17:45:19

His last name is Park. I looked up the ward directory and didnt see any Park in there. That didnt sound good for me huh? Maybe if I concentrated on religion like I do my running Id be up there in the top 10. Ill see you tommorrow it sounds like.

From Michelle on Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 17:48:26

He is actually in the Bishopric (2nd Counsler I think). Anyway, see you tomorrow.

From walter on Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 17:51:48

Oh i will be really embarrased if he's in my ward. Ill let you know. It sounds like hes in the ward that meets with mckee ridge subdivision.

From Michelle on Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 17:53:53

That is where he lives is McKee Ridge. I guess I figured you lived close enough to be in his ward but I know they have split them several times.

From walter on Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 18:17:37

yeah, he must be in that ward. I think they put on our Stake 5k this year and did a great job. I still hold the record if any of you want to try and come scratch my name of next years trophy! lol

From Michelle on Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 18:43:39

Little secret. Actually, not a secret at all but just never tell him I said so but I am sure he had nothing to do with helping put it on. I'm sure the only way he would run these days would be after his dog that runs down the street. He isn't in very good shape right now (or for the past 8-10 years)but he is busy with church, etc.

From Julie on Wed, Aug 13, 2008 at 19:04:35

Michelle, I am so glad you are coming tomorrow. I think you just want to spend your birthday with me. I think as long as we don't kill ourselves on the 5k's, we will be fine on Saturday. Call me if you don't know where we park.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to me!!! Ha, ha-I'll float my own boat. Woke up at 5:00 and had a bowl of oatmeal. Met at SJ Park at 5:30 with the BB-Crew. Ran 3-5k's (actually each one was a little short). First one warm up in 25. I didn't push lap time so I am not sure what my total time for each was but I have the mile splits. 4-7:49, 5-7:53, 6-7:22, 7-8:12, 8-7:46, 9-7:11, last .15-1:04. I cooled down for about a 1/4 m but didn't clock it. Overall pace-7:54. I felt really good today and am confident for Hobble Creek.

I have to go over to the Stake Center at 9:00 this morning and teach Total Conditioning. I am going to try and take it easy. I won't count any miles for it because I am not going to do the pliometrics so mainly just some weights. I'm sure I will be tired later and I won't have a chance to rest at all today. Going to lunch with girlfriends at 12:30 and out with hubby tonight. I may take tomorrow off or just run an easy 3-5. We will see.

Okay, so I wasn't going to work very hard at TC but it is hard not to when you are the instructor so I am giving myself another 3 miles for the class.

Hauns32-Thanks for the comment. Hobble Creek is a fast course and I am really hoping to do it speedy fast (for me anyway) under 1:38. Today was great so I am hopeful.

You are awesome, by the way! Great job today---you are a speed demon! AND...HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU! Who gets up at 5 am to run on their birthday? Oh wait, I know---a crazy person! KIDDING.

From Kelli on Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 18:14:38

Oh, I forgot to ask...how do you know how many miles to give yourself for your aerobics classes and stuff? Just curious since I do step every Monday and Kickboxing every Wednesday.

From Michelle N on Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 18:20:49

Kelli, I go off my heart rate and the effort I put forth. If I am doing a Step Endurance Class, typically my heart rate stays low zone 3 and that is where I am at a 8:30 pace but I will usually just say around 6 miles per hour unless it is a harder interval class and then I do a little more. Sometimes I don't think I give myself enough miles but others too many. I think it all balances out. Oh, and yup I had another little critter since I last saw you. He is 2 and SOOOO cute.

From walter on Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 18:24:26

Michelle, did you just change your name? Youve got me straight trippin' boo! You are some kind of freaky.lol Happy Birthday again.

From Michelle N on Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 18:27:22

Walter-I did change my name to Michelle N. because you thought I was Michelle L. and I don't want everyone to think I am her and then be disappointed when they see me run.

From Kelli on Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 18:30:28

How could he not be cute? Your kids are adorable! I still remember your little girl (I think she was only like 2 or 3) but she made me want another girls so bad!!!

I do not use a heart rate monitor, so who knows! We do a lot of intervals in both classes, but sometimes they are harder than others. You need to teach there! That would be great.

From walter on Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 18:34:22

Just put your name as Michell L and tell everyone your coming to do some speed workouts with us.

From Michelle N on Thu, Aug 14, 2008 at 18:47:53

Kelli-I don't actually wear my moniter anymore because I have scars from it rubbing but I know by how I feel abouts where I am. I really do want to teach there so when you see the owner tell him how great I am!LOL

Walter-If I tell them I am Michelle L. then come they will be like "she is such a liar, she isn't that fast". Ha, Ha

Where do you put in 20 around here, anyway??

From Michelle N. on Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 14:12:26

We are probably going to go up to Wasatch Blvd. and go out 10 and come back. It is tough the first 10 cuz there is SO MUCH uphill. We did it the past 2 Saturdays and I think it helps but it really sucks while you are doing it, especially since Julie is SO good on uphhill. I do okay but she really is amazing on.

From Michelle N. on Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 14:14:01

By the way, nice job today. You did awesome. I have to totally plan my nutrition and rest the day before my long runs. Are you doing Hobble Creek? Is there a marathon in the works?

From MarcieJ on Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 14:20:46

So smart to listen to your body and take a day off if you really feel you need it. I tend to get more nagging injuries when I am exhausted and try to still run to get the miles. Have fun on your long run tomorrow. Sounds tough!!!

From Kelli on Fri, Aug 15, 2008 at 16:18:13

Started at 5:45 or a little later after my parking lot warm-up and potty break in Walgreens. Headed up Wasatch from Albertson's in Draper. Improved on the uphills a ton today. I didn't have to walk at all up the steep monster. We planned on running our first 15 a little slower and picking it up for the last 5 but we ended up going faster the whole time. Our overall pace was 8:20 with all those monsterous hills. I am happy with that. We actually ran our last mile in 7:45 so we had a little kick left in us. All in all a great run and I am feeling great but ready to take it a little easy this week in prep. for Hobble Creek. I think I will cut my mileage back a little this week and not work on much speed. Thanks Julie and Angela for a great run!

I might not win a race by foot but I sure could win a sleeping race. That is my biggest issue. I LOVE to sleep.

From walter on Sun, Aug 17, 2008 at 23:38:25

Thats funny big M, I used to be that way but cant seam to get alot of sleep from the regular routine. I actually have an extremely hard time sleeping, Im bordering sleep problems. I wander the house at night. We rented a house in Moab for the half marathon and I couldnt sleep and the other couples that shared the house with us asked who was wandering around at night. Luckily I took my computer and doodled around on it till I felt sleepy. Its good to see something your better than me at! We can learn from each other!

From Michelle N. on Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 00:14:34

I work really hard at it. I think it is genetics and a natural gift also. I think my kids inherited the gift also. Great news for me. Actually, when I ran the SL marathon in April I only got 3 hours of sleep and got on line and shopped at 2:00 AM. Now I can talk to the other restless bloggers in the middle of the night before a race. I'm sure I will be up Friday night so if anyone is up for good conversation at 1:00 in the morning, I'm sure I will be available.

From walter on Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 00:50:56

If I get a signal on my computer up in Logan I may take you up on the offer. Thats funny.

From Kelli on Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 13:41:44

Late in on that little conversation---but I did not even sleep one minute before the TOU. Nerves were a little part of it, but I call it a good night if I get 3-4 hours straight.

Glad to know I am not alone!

Hope your knee is feeling better and less poppy-like!

Quick question: When you run your long runs, do you stop your Garmin for potty breaks, lights, refueling, etc? A race is so different from a run around the city, I can not decide if I just keep lettingthe time run, or if I should pause it! THANKS! Have a great week.

Missed you again this morning! We were short some blonde hair runners! lol Treadmills are the bomb! Literally! I'd like to bomb them, but seriously they save my butt in the winter. I hate trudging in snow.

From Kelli on Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 18:04:47

6.5 on the treadmill?? That is dedication! I can not get myself past 2 since I started outside running.

See ya tomorrow!

From Michelle N. on Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 18:15:03

I think I must be ADHD cuz I want to do weights and can't bring myself to run at home and then go to the gym and do weights. I'd stink the whole gym out with my sweatiness. Sometimes I really like the treadmill. I will see you both tomorrow.

There is an all famous episode lost in archives that Ill have to tell you about but not on here because Ill lose my priveleges. lol They show it on VH1 every once in a while. It actually exists. Good run this morning.

Well, I met the B-Buttkickers at Parkway Palisades at 5:30. We warmed up for 2 1/2 then went to P. Palisades Dr. and did 1 mile hill repeats with active recovery in between. We did 4 of these and then did 1 minute sprints up the hill at the end and recovered for about a half mile at the end. I forgot my Garmin this morning so I went off Julie's and she had that we did 8:32 average with recovery and all. I feel great and it was a great work-out. I was a little nervous to do hills this morning cuz my lower back and left leg were bugging me a bit last night. I called my neighbor (chiropractor) and he fixed me up and then I iced it good after and woke up feeling good. My left calf was still a little tight the first mile or so but loosened up and felt better. Thanks BB's for another great run. Can't wait for Saturday!!!

Hey thanks, but I feel like a turtle watching you and Peggy up front. You are a guy so it is expected but Peggy is a woman and she amazes me. Maybe I can be as good as you guys when I grow up.Ha, Ha!

Whatever you looked fabulous. And dont let the whole gender thing scare you. Just chick me and show me whats up. It might hurt me but itll make me stronger! Peggy is a great runner, she's been going at it a while so grow up and get some speed. lol you are funny

From Michelle N. on Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 11:27:58

I think the day I beat you is the day I am running down hill after you just ran 40 maybe 50 miles.

From Jody on Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 11:36:52

You did awesome! It was such a tough run and if you felt like a turtle then I was a snail.....See you Saturday.

Jody and I snailed along together...but we finished, we never walked (when we were not supposed to), and we didn't puke. So it was great!

You are fabulous and FAST! We can not compare ourselves to Peggy and Walter, that is just not fair! There were times I could not even see them this morning! And, you ran 20 miles 3 days ago and still kicked everyone elses butts this morning! You are TRULY GREAT! And, you have 5 kids!! That is WORK---I KNOW!

Have a great day.

From walter on Tue, Aug 19, 2008 at 17:16:45

Michelle my friend you have to think positively. I think your about my age anyway so now thats pressure! I know running a few marathons has helped me with my attitude. I used to wonder how people kept running after 18 miles in a marathon. Believe it or not my goal after the first few marathons was to not stop! Its only been a few years since Ive been doing these insane distances. You will be better and better as you push yourself. Keep doing Peggy's workouts and when you tap me on the shoulder, Ill say go around Michelle, youve earned it!

Well, for every great day it seems there needs to be a crappy day that follows. I went to step class (which I normally love) and it sucked today. She did so much jumpings and turning and I thought I was going to fall on my butt. My shins really started to hurt too. My lower back is still giving me a little grief so I am off to the Chiropractor this afternoon. I think my hip flexors are really tight and that is what is causing my back pain. I'm really trying to stretch good and hopefully it'll feel better. After Step I jumped on the treadmill and ran 1 1/2 miles to finish out my workout. Also did Back/biceps and lots of stretching.

If there was only enough hours in the day and I didn't have 5 kids.ha ha. I do yoga on Sunday mornings sometimes but it gets hard with church stuff. I feel so much better when I do it though.

From Kelli on Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 14:24:17

I just go once a week (Thursdays) but it helps. The instructor knows me and my hip issues, so she always caters the class to me. I will need it tomorrow!

I need to find just a basic Yoga for runners video that I can do it home while I listen to my kids scream and kill each other. That is how I have mastered being the mother of 5---ignore them until they are bleeding!

No, I actually go at 9:00. I love Ashli, who teaches. She is awesome. Julie said you are there burning away on the treadmills early.

From RivertonPaul on Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 16:06:36

I figured you didn't go to Jody's 6:00 a.m. class or you'd know I am a regular.

From Michelle N. on Wed, Aug 20, 2008 at 16:13:05

I really like Jody too. She subs sometimes for Ashli. I only can handle a few days a week of "earlier than 7:00" mornings. That is great that you do step though. We have 2 guys that are regulars in my class and they are so good.

Ran with Julie and Angela today. Wanted to have a nice easy recovery paced run but of course we end up running a little faster than planned. It felt like a comfortable speed though and I feel good now so maybe my slow days should be a little faster than I think. We talked the whole time very easily so who knows. Hopefully it was slow enough and I have enough juice for Saturday. Taking tomorrow off totally and I am going to stretch and ice today and tomorrow. I think my back pain is due to really tight hip flexors so a little stretching will probably do some good. Overall pace-8:38

I think you'll be okay on that one, Walter! Remember, all of those big muscles he has cramp up in marathons and he has to crawl across the finish line. Even I can beat a cop in a marathon, and that is saying something!

From walter on Fri, Aug 22, 2008 at 18:17:39

Yeah, I need to help him with that. I have a book that he can read about proper nutrition when training for a marathon and other events. Its all about balancing your sodium and carbos and protein together.

Ate groats and eggs for breakfast @ 4:45. Took Imodium and 3 Ibuprofin. Drank a Zip Fizz and 1/2 Clif Bar @ 6:00.  Got to start line at 7:00 and got to what we thought was a good position but ended up being further back than we thought. Race started at 7:30 and I got stuck behind the big slow group so my first mile kind of sucked. I ran with my next door neighbor (Jake) that is 16 and Julie. The most Jake has ever run is 8 miles and I was so impressed that he kept up and ended up sprinting at the end and beating me by about 5-10 seconds. What a stud!!! Julie did so awesome also. She really keeps me going. She is such a great running partner. She keeps MY head on straight.

1-7:52   Lots of slow peoples I had to pass. Kind of ticks you off when they are taking up the whole road and you have to exert more energy to pass. Oh well, next time I'll get further up front.

2-7:02   Feeling good

3-7:31   Still good. Took Lemon Lime GU.

4-6:52   Sped up hoping to make up a little time from 1st mile.

5-7:40   Hmmm? Dunno, I think this is where my left leg started really hurting.

6-5:58   Well, I think I felt a little too good.

7-7:34   Now I'm payin' for it. Almost puked.

8-7:26   Still Payin'

9-7:17   Right on

10-7:14 Feelin' good. Took an Espresso Love GU

11:7:42  Starting to get tired

12-7:29 Really tired.

13-7:19 Adrenaline kicked in.

.02-:05 Yeah!!!

I measured 13.02 (a little short), everyone else measured around 12.90, so I don't know what the actual distance was. I am so excited cuz I beat my goal by 3 minutes!!! It is now 4:20 and I just got home from my sons football game and I am feeling awesome. A little tired but not too bad.

My daughter started Middle School this morning so I needed to be home to see her off so no road running for me this morning. Besides, I wanted to do some weights at the gym. Ran on treadmill at 8:58 pace for 7 miles and ran last mile at 8:00 pace. It was a nice recovery run and I felt like I could've gone forever. It is nice to know after pushing so hard in a race 2 days ago that my body could just keep going. My back muscles were a bit sore yesterday and so were the tops of my quads but other than that I felt really good.

Oh, did shoulders/tris/abs at gym also.

Met group at Riverton High track @ 5:30 and ran half hour warm-up around in neighborhoods. Most of the group decided to just go for an off track run but Julie, Cheris, Peggy, Walter, Scott and me did 6x800's with 400 recovery in between. I did all of them in 3:30 except the first which was a few seconds faster and the last was about 10 seconds slower. I did not feel it today. I am tired and I'm sure still recovering from Hobble Creek. After the 800's Peggy, Walter, Scott and me did a 400 with a 400 recovery and 2x200 with 200 recovery. I ran 2 more easy laps with Cheris to cool down. I felt like I had lead in my shoes today but still made good time. With recovery and warm-up and cooldown still averaged 8:35.

From Kelli on Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 11:41:15

Okay, according to Jon's little spreadsheet, you were actually number 28 on Saturday!! WOW. He took it all from the official race results, so it should be correct. Julie was 26 and Cheris was 21. WOW!! That really shows just how awesome you guys were (and are).

So, I am dumb here. When you say you did them all in 3:30, what does that mean? Was that how long it took you to do two laps?

From Michelle N. on Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 14:20:54

Kelli-Peggy had us try and run the 2 laps in our hopeful marathon time. If I want to run 3:30 in the marathon then she had us run 3 minutes and 30 seconds for the 800. Don't feel dumb cuz I didn't get it at first either.

From Kelli on Tue, Aug 26, 2008 at 15:38:40

My hubby and I were talking about that and I think I'm gonna see about some wireless ones. If not, I plan on running with Julie the whole time anyway so hopefully we can chat but I like to have one of them in even when I am chatting. Oh well. I'll let you know if I find any cool, cheap, wireless.

From RviertonPaul on Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 14:49:47

The lawyer in me is coming out. Taken from the St. George website,

The USA Track and Field Association, the governing body for running in the United States, has passed the following “Rules of Competition”

Article IV Rule #144 entitled Assistance to Athletes: “The following shall be considered assistance and therefore NOT allowed.

(Section F)

the visible possession or use by athletes of video or audio cassette recorders or players, TV’s, CD or DVD players, radio transmitters or receivers, mobile phones or computers or any similar devices in the competition area. The St George Marathon staff asks for your assistance in maintaining a safe environment for all runners. Please abide by this rule.

Note it says visible possession or use, so technically, wireless makes no difference. Don't worry, I won't turn you in whatever your decision.

From Michelle N. on Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 14:54:33

I actually did read that the other day and that is why I thought that I'd have to purchase some wireless (if they are small enough to hide). Although, I ran up until this year without headphones so I'm sure I could go back. It just sucks though. Do they think that we are going to have our coach chanting in our ear. Actually, that is probably exactly what they think.

From RviertonPaul on Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 14:57:57

My understanding is that the theory behind the rule is that the rule helps with safety issues, for the runner and for other runners, being able to hear I suppose (although I have not read of many deaf runners who run into others). I don't have strong feelings about it, but just my two cents.

From Michelle N. on Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 15:02:44

Why do you suppose they call it an assistance to athletes?

From walter on Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 17:24:36

You know they tried doing that at Moab half marathon also and look how many people finished with them on! When we see the top 20 runners at SGM come in with their Ipods then I think it would be an issue. I think you will kill a marathons reputation if you start pressing rules like that. Funny. What about taking your shirt off? I think that would be a bigger issue to a marathons integrity than having an IPOD. Expecially if your a girl. lol

From Cheryl on Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 17:58:08

I haven't looked at the website, but what Riverton Paul quoted said "please abide by this rule." It sounds like they're just requesting you to not have IPOD's, there's no threat of being disqualified if you do have them. What do you think? Kind of like what happened at Moab, there was just a request but nothing was done to those who had the IPOD's.

From Michelle N. on Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 18:14:42

At Hobble Creek they said that if you were wearing head phones and they saw them, they took down your number and were going to send it to the USATF and if you were seen at another USATF race with them that they would disqualify you. That would suck if you're like me and are trying to qualify for Boston.

From Kelli on Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 19:11:01

I still do not get how it is considered assistance. And so what if you have your coach chanting in your ear? Some people have their coach run by their side, or pacers, or whatever. Look at Lance Armstrong? He had what I would consider major assistance when he ran. He had several "coaches" pacing him, keeping him on target, giving him GU, you name it. That is far more assistance than and iPod could ever be. I think it is flat out ridiculous---it does not create any more of a risk than running (many people get injured and even die while running---but they are not standing there telling you not to do it). We enter the race at our own risk, so if we choose to listen to music, let us do it at our own risk. As a matter of fact, I think the crowds should be outlawed because they yell way too loud and I might not hear something and get hurt.

Sorry, my rant for the day. I, for one, just really enjoy running more with some music. I do not care if it is an iPod or blasting out of speakers as I run by. heck, I do not care if it is just someone singing! I just like running and working out to music. I like running and talking, too, but then I have to run slower. AHHHH---I am really quite annoyed by all of it.

From Michelle N. on Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 19:23:53

I hear ya Kelli! I feel the same way.

From walter on Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 20:20:41

I dont think Boston is associated with USATF. But that is harsh to say they will take your big number down. There are not enough people over the hobble creek race to write down peoples numbers. If they did that they know they would lose interest in their races. Its so ridiculous. Maybe if you sing out loud that would distract other runners? lol

From Kelli on Wed, Aug 27, 2008 at 23:07:10

I was thinking the same thing---WHO wrote down my number???

I could dance, too. That will distract everyone.

Ya know Kelli, I think this blog is even better for me on the days I take off. I am so hard on myself and need to allow myself to not feel well sometimes. I keep go, go, going until I crash and burn and I need to listen to my body before that happens. So, thanks for the comment.

Did step interval class at the gym. It was a bit of a butt kicker today. She had us at AT intervals every 10 minutes and then the last 5 minutes was spent above AT. I figure the class was equivelant to at least 6.5 miles. Jumped on the old tready after for an additional 3.75 miles at 8:30 pace. Boy, it sure is amazing how great I feel after taking a rest day. My feet hurt a bit and I'm not sure if it is bruising or Planters Fascitis flaring up. Have to wait and see I guess. My 2 boys have football games tomorrow so the 20 miler has to wait until Sunday. I'll probably get up and do a few easy miles tomorrow.

Dont you wish they had a pill for fatigue and running injuries? I guess its good to get a break from running. Im not telling if you dont. I had to have one this morning. If I can get up to our campground early enough tonight, Ill run a good 10 or so. Good luck on your 20 miler. My favorite 20 miler is up at the capitol. Start at the parking lot and run backwards through memory grove and around to 11th street in the Avenues, then over to Shriners and back to the City Creek canyon. Then up the canyon road to the top and back will give you 20 miles or real close to 20. It will give you 6 miles of hard hill, 6 miles of downhill and the other is flat with a little up and down. Do it do it now! (my arnold Schwarzenegger impression) See you guys next week. Im going to Bear lake for the weekend.

Got up at 5:00 and met Julie at her house @ 5:45. We drove up to Draper to run Wasatch and it was SOOOOO windy up there so we drove back to Julie's and started there. We headed out to 9800 So. to 4800 W. and headed to New Bingham Highway then turned around. I felt like CRAP today. I had no energy and really struggled the last 6 miles or so. Although we still ran the last 3 at 8:00-8:15 pace. Our average pace was 8:42. The wind was quite bad on the way back and it really slowed us down. It really reminded me of the SL Marathon and how beat up I felt from the wind. I really hate running Sunday cuz I lose my favorite rest day. I had to go to church and because it is the 5th Sunday, I had to do "Singing Time" for the entire Primary time (almost 2 hours). Not fun.

Had crappy run yesterday and really didn't want to run today so I went to the gym thinking I'd do a cycle class. Got there and they had changed the time for the Holiday so I missed it. So, I did shoulders/tris/abs and jumped on the treadmill and did 5 nice, relaxed miles at a 9:13 pace. Wanted to do more but I had to get down to pick-up the kids from the childcare center. I am not at all sore from the 20 yesterday so I am thinking the wind was to blame for the bad run. Maybe the fact that I ate a hamburger and a hotdog the night before didn't help either. I typically eat pizza the night before long runs and races. I guess that is what works for me.

AHHH!!! Pizza, that is what I had before my long run, too. I think it works better than pasta. But, I still think your long run was good, not crappy! Do not be so hard on yourself! According to all of the little training calculators out there, based on your Hobblecreek time, your long runs should be between 8:10 and 9:10---so you are doing fabulous!

Crazy hill Tuesday with the BB's. It actually wasn't too bad today. Probably cuz I missed one of the hills and ran a flat mile after a quick potty stop. A lot of people came today. I felt really good today considering I ran 20 miles two days ago and didn't rest yesterday. It was quite cold and I'm not ready for winter. I feel like we just got out of winter, dangit! Average pace 8:34. I would've liked to go another 1 1/2 but had to get home to get kids off to school. Oh well.

Did Step class at gym. It went a little over so that is why I added the .5. It was a great class today and I had fun. Did back/biceps/abs also. Wanted to do a few miles after but once again I had to run down to get my cute Gavin from the Child Center. Tomorrow will be a great workout and I HAVE to teach my class so I probably need a little extra energy.

Well, I was feeling a little guilty about my lacking miles this week so when my middle schooler got home to watch the 2 year old, I took off and ran 3.75 more. I ran a little faster than I should've dangit! 8:35 average. Not super speedy but faster than I wanted for a slow day. Oh well.

Got new shoes after the gym and wore them on my afternoon run. I'm going to start keeping real track of how many miles the have instead of guesstimating.

Met at SJ Park at 5:30 to do 3-5k's with the BB's. I really didn't feel my very best today but averaged 7:51 overall. That is 3 seconds faster average than last time we did these. My stomach was quite upset today and I had to stop after the 2nd lap to go potty. Note to self: DO NOT eat zucchini right before I go to bed. DUH!!! I've gotta go over to the stake center and teach total conditioning at 9:00. I'll probably add some more mileage for that later.

Well, back from TC and I worked very hard today and got my heart rate above AT several times. I am going to give myself another 5 miles for the hour long class.

Well, I really planned on running this morning but let me start listing the excuses of why I am more than likely not going to. I am sore from my class yesterday. I think my triceps are the only thing on me that isn' t sore (cuz I didn't push them too hard), I am tired, I have to make jam with the bushel of peaches my neighbor brought me from Brigham City, I have to go help in my sons class at 11:00, it's house cleaning day since we have football all day tomorrow and I have to get in our little SJ half marathon we are doing early, it's short day so my kids will be home early, HOLY COW-I think maybe I just want to go back to sleep:) Basically I think a rest day from running might serve me and my family well. I'll report back if I feel too guilty and decide to do something.

About 2 minutes after blogging the above, I decided to go bike at the gym. I hurried there and jumped on a stationary bike for 60 minutes. It was nice to not have the impact today and I was able to read my ACE book.

The BB's did our own South Jordan Half Marathon this morning. 18 of us showed up. We started at Bingham and headed down 2200 W. to 9800 So. and headed west all the way up and through a neighborhood then back down to 4000 W. and headed South to 11800 So. and headed east to 2700 W. and back to 11400 So. then up to 2200 W. and finished back at Bingham. This was a pretty tough course. Lots of uphill, some down and lots of flat. My hubby was our water boy. He met us every 3 miles with water and that made it nice to not have to carry any. I ran with Julie and Angela most of the time and then they got a little ahead of me. Peggy, Amy, Greg and Mike led the pack until the end and Julie and Angela passed them. I was so happy for Julie. She needed that boost of confidence. We definately had a negative split. Our first few miles weren't super speedy but we sped up as we went. I guess a progressive tempo. My time was 1:44:40. Right about an 8:00 average. I feel this would be a good doubler so I feel like I should be able to St. George in 3:30 or less:) Thanks Cheryl for planning the race. You're awesome:)

I did about 1 1/2 mile warm up and 1/2 mile cool down. Didn't clock it.

Well last night was interesting. The hubby and I fell asleep at 11:00. At 1:03 the phone rings and we all know when that happens your heart starts pounding thinking something is wrong somewhere. Well I grabbed the phone and it said "UNKNOWN NUMBER" I answer and no one was there. I actually was able to fall right back to sleep. 3:04 it rings again, this time I grabbed it on the first ring and it said 000-123-4567. My parents are in Africa on a mission and this is the number that shows up when they call (they call from their computer on SKYPE). I picked up and no answer. 3:14 it rings again and same thing, no answer. I started to get worried thinking something was wrong so I ran in the office and emailed my dad to see if everything was ok. He didn't respond so I got back in bed and was able to sleep until 6:30. I checked my emails again this morning and there was one from my dad and he said he was messing around with SKYPE and couldn't get it to work. I was a little angry to be bugged 3 times in the night. For those of you who know me well, you know my sleep is PRECIOUS!

Anyway, on to my workout for the day. I went to they gym to do weights and the treadmill. Started with shoulders and tris (no abs-have to do it later). Jumped on the treadmill and did 6.6 miles at 9:05 pace and 2.4 miles at 8:34 pace. Felt good but REALLY bored today. I really wish they had something to watch other than News, etc. They need a room with bikes and treadmills (like a cycling room) with a movie going (sound and all). I think that would be awesome. I'm noticing that my heart rate is staying around 35-40 beats below my AT on these recovery runs and that when I'm done I am fully recovered in 2-3 minutes. Doin' something right I guess.

First 400 at 10k pace and last 200 all out followed by a 400 recovery in between. 1x1200 at 10k pace with 400 recovery another 2x600, then 800, 600, 400. Cooled down for 400. I didn't feel too great this morning. My stomach was a bit upset when I woke up and it kind of stayed that way the whole workout. Thought I may throw up a few times but didn't. Overall pace-8:00. My warm up miles were around 8:50 average so all in all my track pace was good even with the recovery.

So, no running for me today. Wanna know why? I have a major chaffing (sp?) problem from my sports bras under my boobs. Over share probably. Actually the chaffing started to get better but I think I was allergic to something I put on it and now I have this REALLY ITCHY rash there. It is making me crazy. I couldn't sleep last night very well because it itched so bad. I just read online that I could use hydrocortizone cream and it may help it heal. My kids have eczema and I have a presription of some really good stuff that we put on them so I just applied my first bit so we'll see if it helps. If anyone has any wisdom or knowledge in this area let me know. I feel like a total butthead. I'm not injured dangit but can't run without a bra or I might knock someone out!

I've got the same problem on and off again. I've used either body glide or vasoline along my bra line to reduce chaffeing. I also had to change my sports bra. I've had the best luck with Champion Sports bras. Twice a year the Champion website has bra sales so you can pick up a sports bra for $20 vs the normal $25-40 price.

From Michelle N. on Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 14:09:39

Thanks Deborah. I also have had this problem for a while but this is the first time I've gotter a major rash. I sure don't want to have it happen again so I will check it out. Thanks again.

From Kelli on Wed, Sep 10, 2008 at 14:31:51

Oh my!!! Thank you so much for the laugh for the day!! Now, I am not laughing at your problem, just that you will knock people out if you run. I have always worried about knocking myself out!

I am so sorry about that, I can totally relate. And I do not get why it itches. Mine totally itches and it drives me nuts and it is so red and OUCHY (if I had your flat belly, I would show ya!) I think the sprinting we did yesterday did not help---sprinting just makes those things bounce all over the place!

So, try the deodorant thing. I have a few times and it helped (I just forget most of the time). And I have to agree on the champion bras. Of all the bras, they seem to be the best---but obviously not perfect since I have the same issues! Us "blessed" people just need to create our own bra!

Have fun on that bike!

That got rid of it. I put alot of vaseline on and that helps prevent it.

My chaffing looks a little better today. I was going to get up and run but a new problem presented itself. I think I may have planters fascaitis. I had a couple twinges of pain after hobblecreek and then everything was fine but last night I'd been wearing NO CUSHION flip flops while shopping at Costco and my left foot started to hurt. I thought it would be okay so got my running stuff out for this morning but when I got up at 5:00 it was still hurting.

I went over to teach my class at the Stake Center and everyone was very talkative this morning so the workout wasn't the greatest so that's why only 3 miles for it. I am getting a little frustrated teaching these women. They complain that they are out of shape but as I'm trying to tell them what to do, they stop and talk. Oh well, their problem but it makes me mad cuz I have a gym membership and I could teach other places at that time. I'm not doing it for me (well kind of-for experience) but they will never better themselves if they don't put the effort forth. Okay-enough complaining. I'm just mad cuz I couldn't do everything I wanted to today. But I have been wearing my running shoes all day and I'm hoping to get out and run some this afternoon or evening if my foot doesn't bug me. It didn't bug me while teaching so maybe it is just bruised. Who knows.

PM-Ran 7.7 nice tempo run 8:00 pace. Felt good. Left leg hurt a little for a while I think cuz I was a little tensed up with my foot but relaxed around 3 miles and felt a lot better.

The sell socks at Wasatch Running that keep your feet flexed all night, and people seem to like those (so I made my own--I can show you how!). If it is plantar, at least it is something you can keep under control!

Thanks for your well wishings Paul. I think you're right, I should swear at them and maybe they'll quit being so dang lazy!

Michelle, I'm glad you were able to run today. Jerry said to tell you to try rolling a tennis ball with your foot. He had the same problem when he was running more.

From MarcieJ on Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 23:02:24

Michelle take a small paper cup (like a dixie cup)and fill with water and freeze, then take the paper part off and roll your foot on it. Ices and massages it at the same time, it helped me last year when I started to get a touch of PF.

From Michelle N. on Thu, Sep 11, 2008 at 23:30:47

I think you are right Paul. When I trained for SL Marathon in the spring, I only ran 2-3 days a week and cross trained the other days and still managed a 3:47 on that crappy course and the bad head wind. I'll be curious to see how I do at SG with more running and less crosstraining.

Got up at 4:15 and took 1 Imodium and ate oatmeal and 1 full egg and 1 egg white. Took 3 ibuprofen and drank half a Zip Fizz. Met Julie and Angela at Albertsons in Draper and started right at 5:00. Headed up Wasatch Blvd. all the way to the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon and 1 mile up the canyon. As we were heading up the canyon, we had a major headwind. That was about the only place that the wind was an issue. Turned around and headed back the same way. Kept a pretty comfortable pace up until 16 then pushed it a bit harder. I took GUs at 6, 11 and 16.   I really felt AWESOME today. I just pray I can feel this good on marathon day. Our overall pace was 8:39. Again, very happy with all the crazy hills.

Gym day. I was going to do all treadmill work but decided I wanted to do 1 more step class before the marathon. I'm glad I did. There was a sub and she was a lot of fun and we didn't jump and turn so much. Great workout though=6.0 miles. Jumped on the old tready after for 2 1/2 miles at 8:34 pace followed by back/biceps/abs. I don't know about everyone else but I think mentally, I'm tapering and know I don't have any huge workouts before the big day, so I have a ton of energy. I'm having a hard time sleeping because of backing off a little. Really, I'm not backing off a ton this week but like I said, mentally I think I am soooo......that was a lot of jibberish, hope you can all figure that one out.

Early morning for me. Had to get up at 4:30 to meet BBK's at SJ Park for our 4 5k's. Did first one nice and slow (around 8:30 pace), second still nice and slow (8:20ish), third was around 8:00, and fourth was just under 8:00. Felt good and had to hold myself back from going faster several times.

Went to Stake Center to teach my class and wore flip flops in hopes that I wouldn't participate and I didn't for the most part. Little things here and there but I didn't do the whole class. It was good cuz I was able to correct form and yell a little more:)

Went and bought another pair of shoes since my new ones almost have 100 miles already. I figure I'll stick them in the closet for the most part until the marathon and wear these other new ones until then.

From Michelle N. on Thu, Sep 18, 2008 at 16:25:54

We did run a bit slow but you also ran FAST! The reason for us slowing was...We aren't gonna get any faster on the taper but we could get injured so we took it a little easier. In one of my books it says to try and do marathon pace speed workouts during the taper weeks. We'll see if all this "planning" works out. I probably would have run faster but Julie keeps me controlled.

Good job anyway. What are you guys doing tomorrow? Are you doing the half again? Scott is determined to do 20. I dunno about that.

You guys have FUN tomorrow. I wish I was running where there are no tarantulas!

Michelle, I'm the same way, the gym just usually has a cooler mill to run on. As far as you telling me to ice, I'm not sure I can as the injury is so deep seated in my lower back. Almost like to the bone. By the way get outside and run! This is the most beautiful time of the year!

From Michelle N. on Sat, Sep 20, 2008 at 10:32:03

Steve-I know I'm crazy to run on the tready this time of year but I have a 2 year old and some days just don't pan out for me to go outside. The hubby leaves for the gym at 5:00 so I have to rely on my 12 year old to listen for him but somedays I don't have anyone to run with and it is soooo dark (I live in Bluffdale and the people out here just let their horses run:) so the treadmill has to work some days. It is good to be careful. I hurt my big toe in Step the Wednesday right before this year's Ogden Marathon. That killed my Ogden run. Halfway through the marathon, as a result of having been compensating for the toe injury other parts of my legs were totally out of whack and I developed muscle strains. It's the only time I thought, should I even finish the marathon or am I going to injure myself severely. I just shut down and finished with a terrible time.

I think you should do a moderately slow paced run at -3% decline at Lifetime, not too long but just enough to get a little downhill, but not too close to next Saturday.

From Michelle N. on Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 14:45:26

Maybe I'll try it on Monday. It makes me a little nervous though cuz Julie said when she did it a few weeks ago she was pretty sore for a few days. Do you think it is different than running downhill outside? Everywhere I go away from my house is down and coming back is up. Wish it was the other way around dangit.

From RivertonPaul on Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 14:50:21

Its just a nice controlled -3% decline. Some of St. George is -4%, I would only do a couple of miles if you haven't been doing a lot of the downhills. You've probably got some good benefit from outside in any event.

From Michelle N. on Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 14:58:09

We actually have done a lot of up and down outside. I just wonder if it would be better to do a consistant grade to really work on my form. I am a strong downhill runner but it takes me a little bit to get my form.

I love that you say buggar. My family says buggar but some people think it is a "naughty" word. I can think of a lot naughtier words than that:)

From Kelli on Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 15:50:19

See, I do not know how to spell what I am saying, i do not mean buggar like you pick from your nose and flick at passing cars, I mean BUGGER---I guess that is how I should spell it. But, either works!

From julie on Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 16:26:21

My hips were sore the day after that treadmill run. I'm not sure why. They weren't even sore after Hobble Creek or Ogden. Kinda weird. Great job on your run today.

From Michelle N. on Fri, Sep 26, 2008 at 17:43:47

Kelli-I didn't mean the flick it booger either. I meant BUGGER or BUGGAR or however you spell it, also. Great word.

Thanks Jewels!

It was so nice to not have to get up in the 4o'clock hour on a Saturday:) Woke up at 6:30 and met Angela down at the trail. My plan was to run around 8:30-8:45 pace for most of the run with a few marathon pace miles thrown in but we did the whole run 8:20 average. Half of the miles were  slower and the other half were around marathon pace even with a strong headwind the last 5 miles. I felt really great today and we were able to talk the whole time. I wonder if that is a sign that I should be running faster if I can keep up conversation at marathon pace.

Isn't it strange that we think waking up at 6:30 on Saturday to run 10 miles is sleeping in? I'm the same way. It looks like you are in great shape for the marathon.

Thanks Jody.

Andy-I think we are all a little cuckoo. My husband is still asleep right now. How nice for him. I hope the marathon goes well, you just never know what the day will bring but I sure feel ready. I hope you keep recovering well and feel up to par. Good luck.

From Kelli on Sat, Sep 27, 2008 at 17:16:42

I think that is a definite indication that you can run faster!!! If you have any breath left, RUN!

No, really, I think some people can just talk while they run and others can not. It does not matter how slow I go, i still puff and pant if i try to talk to much.

BUT, I bet you could easily avg 8 in a marathon this year.

I have a strange question. I would like to improve my flexibility and core strength and figured that yoga is a great way to accomplish that. My concern is that I don't want to be the creepy old guy in the class. Are there usually guys in the classes?

From Michelle N. on Mon, Sep 29, 2008 at 17:00:19

The class I went to yesterday was about half and half. I think men are finding it very useful. I do a lot of core but not enough yoga but I think it helps a ton. Give it a try. I think you'll be amazed at how good you'll feel you old guy:)

From Michelle N. on Mon, Sep 29, 2008 at 17:32:56

Julie-I am a little worried about the energy I have. I'm worried that I'm running too fast. I feel great though and it is hard to hold back. After looking at everyone elses posts today, I think I definately ran too fast. I'll run fast for speed tomorrow and then Wednesday needs to be SLOW.

From Jody on Mon, Sep 29, 2008 at 18:30:48

From Kelli on Mon, Sep 29, 2008 at 19:24:38

That is not really all too fast for you, I think the key is to listen to your body, don't you? And you are, so I would not stress.

And as far as your Sunday workout, Yoga is rough when you have not been doing it---runners have very tight hips and need to stretch them long and often!! (That is advice straight from my Dr!)

Good job!!

Woke up nice and refreshed at 5:30. Met BBK's at Bingham at 6:00. Warmed up for 1/2 mile. Did 3x1 mile repeats. First 7:48, second 7:34, third 8:02 (I tried to slow down a bit for this mile cuz I'd gone a little too fast the previous mile and slowed just a tad too much). Followed with 2-2minute (or we were supposed to go to a certain point and stop) sprints. First was 6:27 pace and actually finished the .27 distance in 1:44, second was 6:50 pace and went over this time and did .36 in 2:26. I need to take my Garmin off auto-mile lap on speed days so I can get better splits. These are all hopefully right. Again, I felt great. My left foot was bugging me again yesterday and a little this morning. I hope it feels better and doesn't get worse. I will ice and roll it:)

Hmmm, interesting day. I'm going to start by saying I'm so happy I qualified for Boston but totally bumbed I didn't meet my goal of 3:30 or less. I actually felt awesome the whole race considering the crazy weather.

First of all I couldn't find Julie and Angela at the start which totally stressed me out but I found Cheris and Michelle M. and started with them. About 100 yards in I realized my shoe was untied and had to stop and tie it and catch back up. I peed 3 times before the race started and right when I started had the urge to go again. I waited a little bit and Cheris said she had to go so we stopped together and went and I swear I had 32 ounces in me. We caught back up to Michelle and kept at it. We met up with Julie and Angela before Veyo and started running with them. I had the urge to go again and ducked off in th bushes with Julie. I was feeling so energetic and Veyo seemed easy and I actually did it a couple of seconds under pace. Well, I had to pee again a little bit later and this is where I lost everyone. My IPOD died also from all the water. I ended up having to stop to go pee 8 times!!!! I don't know what my problem was. If anyone has any opinion as to why I had these issues, feel free to comment.  I did my best to hurry and I think at least 300 people saw my butt throughout the whole race, including the helicopter that was right by me one time. I started to get tight around mile 18. I am convinced that I was cold enough that my muscles were crampy for that reason because after I sat in the hot tub I felt pretty good. Anyway, I felt really strong the whole race but I didn't want to give it too much of a kick to early and have issues so I stayed steady and strong. I met back up with Julie the last mile and we stayed together until the last 1/4 and I felt so good that I sprinted to the end. All in all I am happy with my results but I know with better conditions and my bathroom issue, I could've knocked at least 10 minutes off. Oh well, I"M GOING TO BOSTON!!

Oh, I drank 8 ounces of Zip Fizz and 12 ounces of gatorade before the race. I ate steel cut oats, banana and 1/2 clif bar. My typical prerace breakfast. Also, 3 ibuprofen and 1 imodium.

Congratulations to all and lets all hope for no rain and a better race next year.

Hey good job on the race! All you BBK's seemed to have super races, your team training seems to have done the trick. Given that most folks were 5-20 minutes off their times yesterday should give you great confidence that you have a 3:15-3:30 marathon in you. And that 8 pee breaks has got to be a blog record!

Also nice to meet you at the blog party. Hey if you see Terry Bean around make sure and kick him in the shin for me for being such a big meany and taking far to much pleasure the last 1/2 mile in beating his old HS buddy.

I thought about running today, and I still might later but we will see. If not I'm gonna try and get in a few miles tomorrow. Yesterday was my 14th anniversary. Whoa! Where did 14 years go?

Went to the gym this morning (kind of late-got there at 9:30). I did shoulders/biceps/abs followed by 5 miles on the treadmill at 8:49 pace. I noticed my heart rate climb a little higher than normal today. Probably the fact that I haven't done a whole lot the past 2 weeks. I know that is the reason for the increasingly larger butt:) Oh, and the fact that I have eaten like CRAP for the past 3-4 weeks. Today was a new start and I am determined to drop 5-8 pounds. So far so good. If I blog it, I have to do it, right?

Aside from the crappy eating and the heart rate, I did feel really good today. The run felt quite easy and I wanted to go more but time was not on my side.

Go up to the Pearl Izumi outlet in PC and the can really help you find some good stuff. It does get a little expensive though so be prepared. I think my whole wardrobe today (excluding shoes) was probably $250.00. Ouch, a little gouge on the pocket book but well worth it.

Went to the gym again and did an hour long NO LIMITS CARDIO class. I didn't love it. My favorite instructor just started teaching it so I thought I'd give it a try. It was a lot of interval work and I already did that yesterday so it kicked my butt again. I felt a little bit like it was old school aerobics. I think I'm gonna start cycling on Fridays for the next couple of months. For my own purpose I'm going to put down my weekly plan.

Mon-Running/weights  Tues-Running  Wed-Step/weights  Thurs-Running/teach class  Fri-Cycle/weights  Saturday-longer run  Sunday-Yoga?

Also worked tris a little.

Woke up at 5:15 and met Julie, Angela, Jody and Cheris at the trail and ran 8.25 miles. Average pace 8:45. This is the longest I've gone since SG. I felt good cardio but my legs were achey and tired. I did do a lot of leg work this week so that was probably the reason. We had a couple of miles that were pretty speedy when we had a tail wind. Probably a little too speedy but thats okay.

It was great to run with you today! You did awesome, especially with tired legs. Have a great weekend!

From walter on Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 12:33:23

Its ok to have some speedy for my speedy friend. lol Hey I just asked Jody if our paths crossed this morning. Did you see me? I saw a bunch of blogger and non blogger friends on there this morning. I even ran into a West Jordan police officer in full uniform. I asked what he was doing and he said just walking. It was weird! It was 6 in the morning and pitch black so when I came up on him it scared me. I thought he was in pursuit of someone so I had to make sure. That trail gets a little too scary for even me to be alone on.

From Michelle N. on Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 12:37:16

We actually ran on the south side of 12600 So. so we didn't cross paths. It is close for all of us to just zip down there (except Jody who drove 25 minutes) well and me who it takes 15 minutes, but Julie and Cheris live right up the street so we run that part of the trail often.

From walter on Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 12:41:32

I saw a few of the other BBKers around Gardner Village. Way to get out so early! Jody has to drive alot further. we should meet her around 35th south and do some runs there.

From Michelle N. on Sat, Oct 18, 2008 at 12:45:21

Thats right. What kind of friends are we? But then again, no one comes to run with me in Bluffdale either. Wait, I don't even like to run in Bluffdale because of the lovely wind we always have. If it isn't windy I will but that only happens about every 2-3 weeks.

I wish I had a built in babysitter at home all the time. My middle schooler has the day off so I drove to Julie's house (about half way from my house to the gym) and parked my car there and ran to the gym worked out and did shoulders/biceps/abs and ran back.

On the way there, I took a little longer route and had a tail wind and a lot of gradual downhill. Averaged 8:11 for 3.5. On the way back I went a shorter route and it was pretty much gradual uphill with a headwind the whole way. Averaged 8:45 for 3.0. I felt really good today except for my feet hurting a little.

Met BBK's in South Jordan for a run through neighborhoods. I woke up feeling great this morning but I think my faster run yesterday kicked my butt a little because I was REALLY pooped during the run. I wanted to be done at 2 miles but kept going. My legs felt very heavy and I over dressed and was SOOOO hot and sweaty and it didn't help that on the way to meet everyone that I watched my husband get pulled over for running a stop sign and got a ticket. We just barely got accepted back on Bear River Insurance last week. Oh well. Overall pace 8:20.

Met at SJP at 6:00 and ran all the way south in the wind then turned around and ran all the way north and turned back into the wind for the last little bit. Julie, Angela and Jody went 12 but I was back at my car at 10 1/2 so I called that good. I just didn't feel it today. I felt like I was running asleep half the time and the wind sucked. I went to the Jazz game last night and didn't get home until 10:45 so I thought I'd be really tired today but I feel great BUT I took a friend with me to meet the BBK's and I really didn't know what kind of runner she was. We started out the first mile around 9:00 pace and she seemed okay but a couple of minutes into the second mile she told me she needed to walk a little and I didn't want to leave her in the dark so I walked with her. After that it was walk run for the next 2 miles. We got a total of 3.64 miles in and it took 48 minutes. That was really slow but oh well.

I got home and ran another 2.10 around my neighborood 8:45 average.  I have to teach my class at 9:00 so I'll get a little more workout in for the day:)

Just got back from teaching my class. I worked everyone really hard and felt better about my efforts for the day:)

Went to the Jazz game last night and by the time we picked up our kids from Jared's moms house and got home, it was 11:15. Fell asleep at 11:45 and woke up at 5:00 to the sound of rain and wind. I was supposed to be to Julie's at 7:00 and I layed there until 6:30 listening to the rain, dreading the run. I called Julie at 6:30 and woke her up because being the blonde I am, forgot to set my clock back. DUH! She informed me that it was only 5:30 so I had another hour to sleep. We decided to meet at the gym at 7:00 and do our run on the treadmill. It was actually a pretty good run. We started out a little slow but picked it up about 6 miles in and then ran a 5k at marathon pace with a 6:58 1/4 mile at the end, followed by a cooldown. Overall pace 8:30. I felt good other than it being SOOOO hot in the gym. There was no airflow and I got really sweaty.

Okay, let me start with how TERRIBLE I ate yesterday. I did okay until afternoon and then I went crazy with my daughters Halloween candy and then ate Pizza for dinner (Pizza Hut pan style, buttery crust) and bread sticks. Followed by an oreo shake. We were at our neighbors watching WEC Urijah Faber fight (he lost:( ).  I took my half an Ambien and went to bed and was out like a light and actually contimplated not going this morning and then remembered all the crap I ate yesterday and forced myself out. Now I probably only need to burn another 5000 calories today to burn it all off. I will not do that again. I felt so yucky. I think I will take half an Ambien tonight and tomorrow and hopefully I'll be back on my normal sleeping schedule.

Now for the run. Met Julie, Angela and Cheris at Julie's house and ran a 6.2 mile loop up towards the District and back out 11400 So. We witnessed a pretty nasty accident about 1 1/2 miles after we started. Kind of crazy. There were about 4 other cars that stopped to help so we felt like we didn't need to stick around. And besides none of us actually could tell what happened. We just heard a honk and then crash and looked up and saw what the result was. Anyway, I felt really great today until mile 5 and then I had to go potty really bad but made it back to Julie's house. 8:42 overall pace.

Taught my class at the church. I did my normal class for 45 minutes and then did a core class for 20 minutes. They all want me to do a core class each week so I'll be teaching the class for 60 minutes followed by 15-20 minutes of core. Thursdays are going to KILL me.

My back is fine, but my calves are pretty dang tight! Looks like it will be a nice and slow run tomorrow for me.

From Michelle N. on Sun, Nov 09, 2008 at 12:37:56

DEFINATELY! I think I might play a little Dance, Dance Revolution tonight with the kids to see if I can loosen up at all. Great job again, you really did look strong whenever I saw you. I read your comment from Michelle L. and she is right. If you feel good at the end of race, you didn't give it your all. I felt great at the end of SG, so what does that tell you? It was a wierd race for me though. All the pee breaks, kind of crazy. Even though I looked strong yesterday, I was pretty dang tired those last couple of miles. I honestly felt, given my training for the past month, I did my best. Hopefully we'll see you this week with the BBK's:)

From eoliver on Sun, Nov 09, 2008 at 15:32:01

Michelle, that is pretty funny that you do DDR. I started doing it to help with my stabilizer muscles. It is a pretty cool way to work out and the kids seem to love it too. Oh crap, I am telling all my secrets for the world to know.

I have a client who comes at 7:00 and so I have to jump off my bike and run home to meet her. How is Jare'd IT band? I am loving my little black IT band supporter that I bought. I wear it above my knee, unlike the ones we see so many people wearing below their knee. How are your sore muscles recovering?

From Michelle N. on Wed, Nov 12, 2008 at 23:41:52

Angela, it wasn't his IT band, it was his Bursi(sp?) sack. It was full of fluid and the doc drained it 3 times and gave him 2 cortizone shots. It is finally getting better after 8 weeks:(

I felt really good and wanted to keep going but my 2 hours was up dangit. I have been helping my neighbor with weight lifting and it takes more time, so I'm left with less time to run.

PM- 35 minutes Dance, Dance Revoulution. We played on two pads and I played until I got beat by my daughter. I turned my ankle about 15 minutes into it but kept it going.

I went to the gym and the step instructor (Ashli) wasn't there. There was a sub but I've done her classes before and not liked them. Anyway, I lasted 25 minutes and had had enough. She was doing tons of dancing type stuff and aahhh, I didn't like it. I'll count 2 1/2 for the 25 minutes, then I jumped on the stairmaster for 2 3/4 miles and finished on the treadmill with an 8 minute mile and cooled down for 1/4. Not the workout I had in mind but it was alright. I would've done more running but I was wearing cross-trainers and didn't dare do any signifiant miliage in them. Finished up with some legs but didn't get to do all I wanted because the child center called me down. Another little boy had thrown a truck at my 2 year old in the face and he wouldn't stop crying. Warmed up for 1/2 mile. Felt kind of crappy and this wasn't my best race. It was a PR for a 5k race but not for the distance. I haven't done a 5k race in 4 years!

Mile 1-7:28

Mile 2-7:15

Mile 3-7:15

.1-33 seconds (6:21 pace)

I definately felt my lack of running this week and my stomach was still upset. I had nothing left at the end. I got passed on the sprint by 3 girls! Oh well, it was fun and it was my husbands first race. He had only run a couple of times before and finished in 23:43! I was happy for him.

Oh, and Britta beat me by 23 seconds! YAY Britta!

Well, I looked up the actual race results and it said I did it in  22:14. 1st in my age division and 86th overall, and 14th woman. There were 1686 participants.

Michelle,

Considering your sickness, you did AWESOME!! I hate 5Ks!! (Plus, isn't your strength the last half of longer races?)

You did great! Hope you are feeling somewhat better.

Have the best Thanksgiving ever!

From Kelli on Thu, Nov 27, 2008 at 11:49:02

GREAT JOB!!!! That is awesome considering what has gone on in your life lately!!! And yeah Britta---did she sprint past you???

From Michelle N. on Thu, Nov 27, 2008 at 12:50:07

Thanks Teena! And you are right, it takes me a little while to warm up. Oh well.

Kelli, Britta didn't sprint past me. She must've been up closer to the front because I never saw her. She did great. She must be a sprinter. Not me! I'm a better endurance runner. I'll let you know about Saturday ASAP:)

I need to finish reading Breaking Dawn so I can move on with my life! I started Twilight last Saturday and am almost done with Breaking Dawn. My husband is irritated that I have been reading so much but I kind of feel like a teenage girl reading these dang books! They are sooo good. Anyway, my point in writing this down is to put the reason for not running today. I can read much better when I am on the stairclimber:) Like I said, almost done.

BTW, I ended up sick again on Thanksgiving. It stunk! So, that is why my last week was crappy on the running end of things. Although, I got lots of reading in:)

Well, I really intended this week to be better but I had one of my kids with asthma aggrivated by pneumonia, and another one with the flu. So much fun. Anyway, I went to the gym and ran on the treadmill. I did 4 miles at a 8:49 and then 1 mile at 8:00, then did a half mile at 8:49 pace, half mile at 7:30 pace, half mile at 8:49 pace, half mile at 6:44 pace and then cooled down from 8:49 down to 10:00. I definately can feel my lack of running. I need to get my booty in gear.

I'm feeling my motivation coming back. Maybe it has to do with the fact that I've gained 5 pounds and I'm going to Hawaii next month. Nothing like a week in a swimming suit to motivate weight loss:)

It ended up snowing SOOOO much at our house on christmas eve-christmas day. We had 5+ foot snow drifts and I'm sure it ended up snowing another 18+ inches. We went to open our garage to leave Christmas morning and had a 3 foot wall of snow. The hubby put the old suburban in 4 wheel drive and rallied out of the driveway. A little scary!

I took my pace up to 6.7 and thought I'd puke so I took it back down to 6 and stayed there for quite a while. Took it up to 6.4 for a while then to 6.7 and decided to call it quits at 9 miles. We'd planned on 12 but....  Julie got over 10 miles in the same amount of time. I don't know what my deal was or is. I still feel yucky.
