Short-Term Running Goals:

I've gotten the running bug back and hope I can continue to enjoy it. I think for now, my short-term goal is to NOT burn myself out. I am pro at doing that. I have a half and full marathon that I am planning on racing in a few months. I hope to be trained well enough to PR in both, but if not...I will enjoy the ride.

Under 1:30 half

3:15 marathon

Whew! I hate the wind! That was a TOUGH race this morning.

Miles:

1-7:28 Way too fast. I was pushing a 6:30 for part of this mile and then slowed down a little.

2-7:31 More even pace but still too fast.

3-8:15 Tithing hill, into the wind and paying for going out too fast

4-7:56 Feeling kind of yucky. Took a GU

5-8:14 Into the wind and feeling crappy

6-8:16 Same as 5

7-7:56 Julie and Angela caught up to me and I ran with them. That helped a ton

8-8:15 Not sure, just slower

9-7:48 Starting to feel a little better. Turned out of wind and took a GU

10-8:07 S-curve hill so to be expected

11-7:43 Starting to feel pretty decent

12-7:26 Felt good

13-7:24 Starting to feel pretty tired

.1-:52 (6:29 pace) Gave it all I had and finished right with Angela.

Angela was the 8th woman and I was 9th. Really tough course and conditions. The headwind really whiped me out from miles 4-7.5. It is amazing how much you slow down with a wind. It wasn't my day all in all. Other than the first mile, I really didn't feel good. Definitely a sign that I went out WAY TOO FAST!!!

Jared (my husband) finished in 1:47. This was his first 1/2 and he hadn't run more than 8 miles so I was very impressed with that time. Especially for the conditions. Peggy and Lynette got 2nd and 3rd overall woman. Walter, Tyler S. and Sean Bullock were 1,2,3 in the men. Overall very impressive.

It was fun but definitely not one of my best races. I felt like I gave it a 1:40 or less effort but ended up with 1:43:15. I did get 1st in my age group though so that makes me happy:)

Headwind can slow you down a lot in and of itself, and then even when it stops it may take a while to change gears, so you are still running as if you were fighting the headwind even though it is not there. That actually makes you slower, not faster. It is similar in a way to trying to run immediately after getting off a bike. You are still trying to ride a bike for a mile or two, or more. Different people have different levels of ability to switch gears. Thus, a wider spread in the time when it is windy. The only thing you can be sure of on a windy day is that you ran slower than you would have otherwise. How much slower is difficult to tell.

Awesome! You really gave it a great effort and the WIND is definetely not fun to run in let alone run a race in, great job today!

Nice job winning your age division!

Great race report! That wind was a royal pain, especially on the trail.

You got your 1st in age group----THAT IS AWESOME!!!! Now you get to wear a medal that says 1st, am so jealous. Those were cool medals. And Jared did great, too. That is a heck of a time for a first half.

Thanks all!:)

Thanks Sasha for the comment. I have always said that the wind kills me. I live in the wrong place to have it affect me so much. It is always windy in Riverton and Bluffdale. It REALLY took it out of me for several miles today.

Kelli, you did so great! I about died when you ran past me, after such a tough race last weekend. I told you that you are improving so much.

Great job Michelle. That is so cool that you were first in your age group. I'm glad you slowed down so I could run with you for a while. You are a great runner.

Very nicely done, for a stepper.

Great race Michelle! Way to go! That wind was not our friend today :(

Awesome job! You did great! Sounds like the wind was tough, but you prevailed.

See you Tuesday!

Way to go Michelle! You're so faster than me.

Great run today and thanks for the build up. I was just glad to finish. Jody had softball games today with her kids that she couldn't miss so she was obligated elsewhere.

Michelle, you did a great job! Congrats on the age group win. That wind really was stinky...kind of glad I had an excuse not to run in it :)

Congrats on AG win! Looking great for Boston!

From Terry on Mon, Mar 30, 2009 at 10:19:44 from 64.244.102.218

Nice race! Even though I beat you I got 10th out of the male runners and you got 9th out of the female runners. So I'd say you're the better runner. I know were to come to for running advice now. Good luck at Boston.
